There are more than 18000 bird species in the world. The smallest bird in the world is the hummingbird and the largest is the ostrich. There is a big difference in size.
Each species is very different in many ways but there is one thing that all birds have in common. They spawn in spring. Now you may be wondering why birds lay their eggs in spring.
Why do Birds Lay Eggs in The Spring
Birds lay eggs in spring because spring provides a food source for birds that take a long time to reproduce and have young before winter arrives.
For most bird species the mating season begins after the spring migration to their birthplace.
Seasonal signals stimulate hormones that allow birds to mate. Birds migrate in search of food.
If the birds lived in the hot tropics Im sure their food would no longer be plentiful as the bird population in this small area would run out of food very quickly. Migration helps ensure that food sources have time to rebuild so birds can return the following season.
Mating
Male and female birds begin searching for nests as soon as they return to the hatching site. Male birds start mating with females and females have the right to choose who they mate with.
Nesting
The nest is a safe place for the female to lay her eggs and is the most important first step in the mating ritual. Each bird species has its own variation of nest eggs that have evolved over the years to keep eggs and chicks safe.
Birds build their nests using available materials such as grass and leaves.
Egg Laying
Different species lay different amounts of eggs called clutches. Pet finches often lay only one egg at a time while tropical birds such as parakeets and budgies lay four to six eggs. Different species of ducks usually lay between 6 and 15 eggs at a time.
