Information - What is Bodington?
A quick overview
Bodington is software with which you can build a free open source Virtual Learning Environment (Learning Management System). It provides you with a system which you can use to map out your department’s or organisation’s structure on the web, providing access according to role, and which can quickly and easily be populated with a range of resources created by staff who can equally easily control access to students.
Bodington enables you to upload lecture notes, student handbooks etc and to create interactive resources such as multiple choice tests, short-answer tests, online surveys, logbooks and reflective diaries. Students can be given access to secure ‘pigeon-holes’ into which they can post their work for marking and return. All with a few simple clicks and some basic information. It is designed to allow people with little to no HTML skills to use the web to make an effective contribution to their teaching easily and quickly.
Bodington uses a metaphor of buildings, and within those buildings there are floors and rooms. These are analogous to directories and folders, but the metaphor lends itself to institutions where the students and staff identify material with specific physical locations. However, it is only a metaphor so it can be easily adapted.
Bodington is also fully accessible and adheres strictly to the legislation on this.
So if you want a system that:
- lets you put material on the web quickly and easily
- lets you control access to that quickly and easily
- lets you create online interactive learning tools
- is tested in large institutions to be both robust and scalable
- is flexible to allow you to create resources to suit *your* needs
- runs off of Microsoft servers, and LINUX machines
- can be delivered to clients on any platform using any up to date browser
- is open source so you can develop the code to suit your own needs
- is part of a growing, thriving development community
- IS FREE!
BUT
- does not tie you down to a set structures (e.g. modules and courses)
- does not break accessibility guidelines
- does not cost you an annual licence, or make you pay for support costs, and upgrades
Then give Bodington a try! You can download a free demonstration version to run off of a CD.
